Not much point being cynical for long and seeing the new videos as more commodification and control of the practice, the behind the scenes photos from the shoot show the delight and excitement of those involved, the participants clearly saw it as a great honour to be able to take part in such a project with their teacher, the delight and excitement is a little infectious.
I have a soft spot however for the old Yoga Works Primary and Second series videos below from 1993, those are the videos I pretty much learned my practice from and there is a kind of innocence, a magic to them I don't see the need to reproduce them, homage or not. But then perhaps not everybody thought it a good idea when Chuck Miller turned up with his Yoga Works cameras (note: supposedly the filming of the 1993 Primary series took 8 hours - see the note to the video below).
What I WOULD like to see is Pattabhi Jois' son Manju leading as many of the original members of those 1993 videos through Primary again, what, twenty-five years later.
I pretty much learned my Ashtanga from the videos below, I had books and led videos by David Swenson, Mark Darby, Richard Freeman but it was these old Pattabhi Jois videos along with the one by Sharath and Later manju's with just the count that I would practice along to more than any others. It's said you can't learn from books and Youtube videos, that's true you learn from practice whether the input comes one to one from a teacher or from a video. This is an embodied practice, we learn by doing.
